Torn between dreams, expectations, and reality.
Torn between dreams, expectations, and reality.
This responsive installation art project is inspired by Sam Mendes' 2008 romantic drama film, Revolutionary Road, depicting the collision of dreams and reality. The installation comprises 20 lenticular-printed cards with contrasting images on the front and mirrors on the back, installed at different heights to create an interactive experience reflecting the themes of hope and despair explored in the movie. The project overall aims to highlight the stark contrast and despair experienced when torn between dream, expectations, and reality.

Creating a moodboard.
Creating a moodboard.
Inspired by Revolutionary Road, I chose lenticular printing to capture the film's duality and contrasting dreams. Like the (main characters) Wheelers' divergent visions, lenticular prints create depth from various angles.
Each response will be depicted on 20 lenticular cards, forming an installation that invites viewers to look up, echoing the film's theme of hope. This setup enhances the experience and connects directly with the film's profound themes.

From mindmap to visualization.
From the ideation process, I visualized the emotional response words through design. For each word, I created a mindmap of associated images and concepts. This exercise guided my decisions, focusing on how to use contrast to reflect the stark reality-versus-dream themes of the film.

From different and various locations, “Kirinji Studio” (Seoul, Korea) was selected, in consideration of how it aligns with the overall mood of the movie and how the monotone atmosphere of the studio enhances the illustration of the sense of stillness, of calm and peaceful environment yet to be disturbed.
